Guides for insurance agents
Short, sourced answers to the questions agents get asked: grace periods, GST, third-party rates, NCB, IDV, tax and more.
Every guide starts with the answer, links its sources, says where a fact rests on one source, and shows the date it was last checked. None of them ranks an insurer or tells you which plan to sell.
- Grace periods for life, health and motor insurance in India Life and health premiums get 15 days on monthly mode and 30 days on other modes. Motor has no grace period in these circulars. Sources linked.
- GST on insurance premiums from 22-09-2025 Individual life and health premiums carry no GST from 22-09-2025. Group policies stay at 18%. The date of payment decides. Official source linked.
- Motor third-party premium rates in India The notified TP premium for every class: private car, two-wheeler, goods, bus, three-wheeler, taxi and Misc-D. With the Rules linked and the last check stated.
- No claim bonus (NCB) and the 90-day rule NCB is 20% after one claim-free year and 50% after five, on own damage only. The tariff keeps it only if the policy is renewed within 90 days of expiry.
- IDV depreciation: the schedule by vehicle age IDV is the listed price less depreciation: 5% up to 6 months, rising to 50% at 4 to 5 years. Beyond 5 years, the insurer and insured agree it.
- 80C and 80D on insurance premiums: limits and regime 80C allows up to ₹1,50,000 in all, and 80D up to ₹25,000 or ₹50,000 per group, in the old regime only. The new regime gives neither. Official source linked.
- FUP, DOC and PPT explained FUP is the first unpaid premium, DOC is the date of commencement, PPT is the premium paying term. How they fit together, and how to keep them in a sheet.
- Tracking renewals: Excel or an app? Excel works for a small, tidy book if you open it daily. An app earns its place when you need the day's list, reminders and documents on your phone.
- WhatsApp reminders to clients, done right Message people who agreed to hear from you, one at a time, with your name and the real date. Stop when they ask. No promises the insurer has not made.
- Health insurance portability: the basics A client can move a health policy to another insurer and keep credit for waiting periods and bonus. The old insurer has 72 hours, the new one 5 days to decide.
